There are lots of different methods to monitor or assess how many of the competencies keepers have developed and to create plans for improving, even where zoos do not have extensive systems or budgets for training and professional development.
The following techniques may be useful for those who want to assess and create evidence of progress developing the competencies:
- Individual Keeper Portfolios enable keepers to gather evidence of the competencies they have demonstrated.
- Standard Operating Procedures and organisational sign off processes allow managers to record the competencies required to work in a particular area and record which of their staff have achieved the required level for each competency.
- Professional Development Plans can be used by keepers or their managers to identify how an individual will achieve the competencies they need to develop.
- Peer reviews provide a cost effective way of assessing whether a keeper is able to demonstrate a particular competency.
